Location
Morrill Hall, Room 160

About this event

“What are you going to do with THAT major?” This might be a question you’ve heard a few times if you’re majoring in English (or another humanities field), and we’re here to tell you that the English major prepares you for almost any career path! But it can sometimes be challenging to translate the skills you’ve developed through your coursework into the language of a job application. That’s what this workshop is for! In this session, we’ll talk about how the work you’ve done and will do in English classes helps strengthen in-demand career competencies. Additionally, we’ll discuss carer exploration and job search strategies tailored for students in English majors and minors.

About this event

Sustained Experiment: Labor, Absence, and the Making of Black Mountain College

Abstract: Black Mountain College, an experimental college that operated in North Carolina from 1933 to 1957, coalesced around principles of progressive pedagogy, communal living, and an unusual integration of the arts into academic life. Although it has been widely mythologized for its iconoclasm and influence on postwar American art—particularly through the work of Bob Rauschenberg, John Cage, Josef Albers, and Ruth Asawa—the forms of labor that sustained the dissident institution are often minimized or rendered invisible in accounts of its history and impact. Drawing on college records held by the Western Regional Archives (Asheville, NC), I consider why certain kinds of creative, pedagogical, and institutional labor are remembered, why some are forgotten, and what that erasure means for how we conceive of the work of a college today.

About this event

Agriculture Trade & Policy: The Outlook for Midwest Grain Markets
Featured Speaker: Professor and Andersons Chair of Agricultural Marketing, Trade and Policy at The Ohio State University, Dr. Ian Sheldon

The talk will begin with an evaluation of how U.S. implementation of across-the-board tariffs has affected the grain and oilseeds sector in the Midwest. Specifically, it will be shown that retaliation by China has had a significant impact on farm exports, notably of soybeans, and at the same time farmers are facing higher input costs. Given this environment, the talk will evaluate prospects for exports, focusing on market potential beyond China. In addition, the importance of maintaining Mexico and Canada as key trading partners will be outlined in light of the upcoming review of the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA).
