Job Description

Ohio State Marion is seeking enthusiastic and dependable students to serve as Compost Champions, supporting the campus's growing sustainability and expanded waste management program. Compost Champions play a key role in collecting and processing food waste through the campus composting program while helping educate the campus community about sustainable practices.

Under the guidance of Ohio State Marion staff, Compost Champions will assist with the basic operation of the campus composter located behind the Ohio State Marion Library and help ensure compost collection stations remain clean, functional, and accessible. This paid position offers hands-on experience in sustainability and maintenance operations.

Key Responsibilities

Collect compost material from designated compost collection sites across campus.

Replace and re-line compost collection bins.

Weigh, track, and accurately record food waste collection data.

Load collected food waste into the on-site composting system.

Unload finished compost from the composter and prepare it for pick-up.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized worksite.

Monitor compost collection bins and report maintenance or operational concerns.

Be a champion: Lead by example and educate students in supporting campus sustainability initiatives and responsible waste management.

Qualifications

Available to be on the Ohio State Marion campus most days each week.

Currently enrolled and in good academic standing with the university.

Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated interest in sustainability.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to perform light physical tasks, including lifting, carrying, and moving compost collection containers and materials.

Schedule: Split workweek with another Compost Champion (typically 2–3 days per week per student)

Hours: 1–2 hours per shift, primarily during evening hours
