Sivakoff recognized with Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching
Frances Sivakoff, assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology and faculty member at The Ohio State University at Marion has been selected as a recipient of The Ohio State University’s 2024 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Established during the 1959-1960 academic year, it is one of the university's most prestigious teaching awards.
Senior leadership surprised Sivakoff with news of her selection during a virtual meeting on March 27. Joining the celebration were Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Patrick Louchouarn, Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources Helen Malone and Ohio State Alumni Association Chief of Strategy and Belonging Tina Pierce.

Tibbals selected for 2024 Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer
Amy Tibbals, a senior lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of English at The Ohio State University at Marion, has been selected as a recipient of The Ohio State University’s 2024 Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer.
A long-standing faculty member at Ohio State Marion and much-respected cornerstone of the campus writing program, Tibbals is a firm believer in student-centered education and has a passion for incorporating service-learning into student learning.

Three faculty recognized with 2022-23 Marion Campus Teaching award
Ohio State Marion faculty, Senior Biology Lecturer, Melissa Petreaca; Senior English Lecturer, Peter Dully; and Assistant Professor of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, Jonathan Calede were formally recognized with the 2023 Marion Campus Teaching Excellence Award during the campus's annual Academic Recognition Ceremony, Friday, April 21, in Morrill Hall Auditorium.
Students and faculty were encouraged during the academic year to nominate faculty members they felt worthy of recognition in both the category of associated faculty, who are primarily charged with teaching and tenure track faculty, whose work includes research and university governance in addition to teaching.
The Marion Campus Teaching Excellence Award recognizes faculty who challenge students to articulate connections between their coursework and their lives outside of the classroom; who foster high-level critical and analytical thinking skills; who create inclusive and equitable cultures of learning for students; and who develop strong mentoring relationships with students, encouraging students to reach their full potential.
PALS named one of fourteen Engagement Grant recipients
The Office of Outreach and Engagement has awarded more than $250,000 to 14 recipients of 2023 Engagement Grants, including Dr. Nikole Patson and Dr. Ben McCorkle of Ohio State Marion, who were awarded a grant to expand the Pride and Life Skills mentoring program. Grants were awarded at a maximum of $20,000 to support development of impact reports for programs, performances, or exhibits; development of a public policy document or impact report; development or implementation of a program, performance, exhibition, or initiative based upon previous research, assessment, or public input; or enhancement or expansion of a program that extends community access to the university.

Rhizobia biology and isolation techniques workshop hosted
Assistant Professor of Biology, Frances Sivakoff hosted a workshop, sponsored by the Ohio State Marion Honors and Research committee. For the three Fridays in May (May 12, 19, and 26), Dr. Sivakoff hosts Dr. Paul “Skip” Price, Senior Microbiologist at Corteva Agriscience and Visiting Professor at Eastern Michigan University to lead a workshop on rhizobia biology and isolation techniques. On May 12, Dr. Price will present a lecture on rhizobia at 9:30 a.m. in 210A MSE. He and Dr. Jonathan Calede will also participate in a CURE (Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience) panel for several biology and chemistry faculty at 1 p.m. in the same room.

Dr. Aina Appova, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, awarded $100k grant for new partnership in Columbus City Schools
Ohio State Marion Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, Dr. Aina K. Appova was recently awarded $100,000 for a new partnership grant with Columbus City Schools (CCS). This is a 2-year project that is focused on Developing Elementary Students’ Early Algebra Skills and Algebraic Reasoning.
The purpose of this partnership between College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) and Columbus City Schools (CCS), said Dr. Appova, is to support the school district in addressing educational issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, while also advancing the work of Ohio State's College of Education and Human Ecology faculty research for two years in the school district. https://u.osu.edu/appova.1

At the point when Dr. Petreaca was promoted to Associate professor with tenure, he was also selected as one of three faculty to receive the Early and Mid-Career Faculty Excellence Awards recognize outstanding performance in all three areas of research, teaching and service of early and mid-career faculty at the time of promotion.

Orban receives Grant for High Energy Laser Research OSU and Wright Patterson AFB
Associate Professor of Physics Chris Orban is the principal investigator of a National Science Foundation and Department of Energy project "Enhancing Laser Based Ion Sources with High Data Rate Techniques". The project involves applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to control laser interactions on some of the most intense laser systems in the world. A key partner on the project is an intense laser research group at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. Orban often collaborates with other researchers on OSU and Wright Patterson.

Ohio State Marion stats professor lends expertise in Australia
In his sabbatical year, Ohio State Marion Professor of Statistics, Omer Ozturk spent September 2019 through April 2020 conducting agricultural statistical research with a team of scientists at the Biometry Hub from The University of Adelaide, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine in Australia. The goal of Ozturk’s research centered on field sampling from vineyards and other agricultural fields to reduce the sampling cost of data collection. Despite having his trip cut short due to the coronavirus epidemic, Ozturk felt he was able to accomplish a number of goals.
Calede discovers now extinct species of horned rodent

Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, Dr. Jonathan Calede has uncovered a now extinct new species of rodent with horns that lived in Nebraska during the Miocene epoch.
“The new species is part of a genus called Ceratogaulus. The only genus of rodents to ever evolve horns,” said Calede.
The extinct rodent is most-closely related to the sewellel, also known as the mountain beaver, a rodent alive today in the Pacific Northwest. The group it belongs to (the mylagaulids) is completely extinct. The sewellel is the last surviving relative.

Ohio State Marion Associate Professor of English, Sara Crosby was among five Ohio State arts and humanities faculty awarded this year’s Ronald and Deborah Ratner Distinguished Teaching Award during a surprise presentation in front of her spring semester English 4597.02 course, American Regional Cultures in Transition - Strange Louisiana.
The Ratner Award recognizes faculty for making a difference in students' educations, lives, and careers. Candidates are chosen for creative teaching and exemplary records of engaging, motivating, and inspiring students. Each Ratner Award includes a $10,000 cash prize, as well as a $10,000 teaching account to fund future projects.

Whitacre speech excerpt..."Physics, philosophy and astronomy go hand-in-hand in a project spearheaded by Christopher Orban, assistant professor of physics at Ohio State Marion. The Revolution in Cosmology and Fr. Georges Lemaître’s Hidden God” examined Lemaître’s work as an astrophysicist and priest in the early 20th century. His research helped lay the groundwork for the Big Bang Theory and also produced some of the most fascinating interactions between science and faith in the last century. Support from the Battelle Engineering, Technology, and Human Affairs Endowment enabled Chris to develop new coursework and public lectures exploring not only Lemaître’s scientific accomplishments, but also the religious dimension of his work."

Ohio State Marion students kicked off the season of giving by collecting, packaging, and distributing over 1,000 articles of winter accessories to help less fortunate Marion area families stay warm this winter. Students from Amy Tibbals's English 2367.01S were able to assemble and distribute over 455 “Loving Scarves” bags to the local community, through partnerships with a number of Marion and Central Ohio non-profit organizations.

Ohio State Marion, Professor Emeritus, Dr. Mary Jo Fresch (College of Education and Human Ecology) was recently selected to serve as a faculty fellow for Ohio State’s newly formed University Institute for Teaching and Learning. The University Institute for Teaching and Learning was developed as part of Ohio State President, Dr. Michael V. Drake’s 2020 vision for the university. The Institute challenges and charges faculty to ensure that the university is as highly regarded for world-class teaching as it is for research. In response, a university-wide planning committee, an advisory committee, and extensive dialogue with approximately 200 faculty, staff, and students led to the development of a proposal to establish the Institute, which was officially adopted by the University Senate in April 2016. Fresch is not the only Ohio State Marion faculty member involved in formation of the institute. Prof. Aina Appova
Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Education, Aina Appova will be presented the Kenneth Cummins Award for exemplary mathematics teaching at a college level, during the 66th Annual Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) Conference in Sandusky, Ohio, October 27 & 28. To be considered for this statewide award, the teacher must have been nominated by a member of Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and completed an application.This award is named after Kenneth Cummins. Dr. Cummins was well known in the mathematics community for his outstanding teaching. He was on the mathematics faculty at Kent State University and made numerous presentations at OCTM, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America meetings. He was widely known for conducting numerous summer and academic year institutes for high school mathematics teachers in which he reached a large number of teachers of mathematics throughout the state.

Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences, Dr. Joel Barker was recently part of a collaboration between the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development and the Division of Hydro-meteorological Services in Bhutan to examine the mass balance and hydrology of Thana Glacier, Bhutan. Thana Glacier is a so-called "benchmark glacier" that is monitored every year to provide an idea of how glaciers are behaving in the region. Barker's particular interest in Thana Glacier is to determine how much soot (black carbon) is deposited on the glacier surface and exported to rivers and lakes in glacier melt water. According to Barker, black carbon can promote glacier melt by darkening the glacier surface, and may affect downstream ecological processes as well.

Prof. Chris Orban
Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Physics, Chris Orban was recently chosen for funding in the 2016 Battelle Engineering, Technology and Human Affairs (BETHA) Endowment annual grant competition. BETHA grants support projects that examine the complex relationship between science and technology on society and cultural issues. In total, 19 proposals were submitted for consideration. Orban was selected to receive one of only six Battelle Engineering, Technology and Human Affairs Endowment (BETHA) grants. His proposal "The Revolution in Cosmology and Fr. Georges Lemaitre's Hidden God" was chosen to receive funding in the amount of $25,000 for 2016-2018. Recipients and their guest were recognized at a luncheon on April 19 at the Faculty Club. Chris Orban is a 2011 Ph.D. graduate of The Ohio State University. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Department of Physics serving at the Marion campus.

Prof. Nathan Wallace
Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of English, Nathan Wallace recently published his 296 page hard cover book, Reconciliation in Ireland from Yeats to Field Day, by Cork University Press (Ireland).

This book is a genealogy of reconciliation in modern Ireland. As Seamus Deane has written, reconciliation stands at a nexus between politics and aesthetics in Irish writing, and has therefore often been a vehicle of colonial ideology. This book shows that the term often fits into a pattern that the author calls the "iconography of reconciliation".
This iconography began in the 1810s when Samuel Taylor Coleridge synthesized Edmund Burke’s thoughts about Ciceronian conciliatio and Aristotelian ethos with Schlegelian literary organicism. That is, Coleridge identified what Aristotle called "ethical music" with the "balanced" personality of Romantic literary genius itself. Wallace then shows that Matthew Arnold and Edward Dowden adopted this Coleridgean synthesis and used it to make their writings about Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Sophocles (now icons of reconciliation) chime with their writings in favor of the Anglo-Irish Union.
Moving on to the twentieth century, Wallace shows first that Yeats and Joyce contested the Unionist icons and, later, that Conor Cruise O’Brien revived them in his writings about Northern Ireland. Wallace finishes by arguing that Field Day countered O’Brien’s "Sophoclean" reading of the Troubles with their own, more ethically responsive icons of Sophoclean reconciliation between 1980 and 1990.

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees officially approved the promotion of Ohio State Marion's Dr. Donna Bobbitt-Zeher to associate professor with tenure during the June 2015 Board meeting. Dr. Bobbitt-Zeher has taught sociology courses at Ohio State Marion since October 2008.

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees officially approved the promotion of Ohio State Marion's Dr. Anna Willow to associate professor with tenure during their June 2015 Board meeting. Dr. Willow has taught anthropology courses at Ohio State Marion since September 2009.

Long-serving associated English faculty, Pete Dully and Sue Oakes, were among the 40 nominees university wide for the 2015 Provost's Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer. The Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer annually recognizes a maximum of three lecturers, senior lecturers, or other auxiliary faculty members for their teaching excellence. Students, faculty, and alumni may put forward nominees, and a committee of students, other award winning faculty, and alumni will choose the recipients.
Prof. Tracy Tylka -Ohio State Marion Professor of Psychology, Tracy Tylka edited a 6-article special issue, entitled "Positive Body Image: Avenues for Assessment, Application, and Advancement," that will appear in the June 2015 issue of Body Image: An International Journal of Research. Within the issue, Tylka also authored two articles, "What is and what is not positive body image?" and "Assessing positive body image: Contemporary approaches and future directions."
Prof. Linda Parsons - Ohio State Marion Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning, says of the modern version of Cinderella. In “Voices: It’s time for a modern Cinderella,” USA Today, March 15, 2015, she explains that the studio borrowed from a French version that was less progressive and feminist than the Grimm fairytale.
“What [Disney] kept alive is the Perrault version of Cinderella … you have other versions like the Grimm version which are actually much more progressive and much more feminist, if you will, than the version Disney has kept alive,” says Ohio State University professor Linda Parsons.
Prof. Elisabeth Boyer - Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Education, Elisabeth Boyer, Ph.D. was recently interviewed for a news segment on standardized testing in schools by Columbus, ABC 6, specifically the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test (PARCC).
"Overwhelmingly they're saying that's not an accurate evaluation of their ability to teach," said Elisabeth Boyer, an OSU professor who provides advanced education to teachers.
She worries that teachers are "teaching to the test," spending too much class time teaching what kids will be tested on and not focusing on other subjects. Boyer urged teachers to talk to their unions -- and urged parents to support teachers.

Prof. Chris Orban - Ohio State Marion Assistant Professor of Physics, Chris Orban, Ph.D. contributed to a highly-awaited scientific study on stellar plasmas entitled “A higher-than-predicted measurement of iron opacity at solar interior temperatures” that was recently published in the journal Nature. The study was led by staff scientist Dr. Jim Bailey of Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
