About this event

What is The Shakespeare and Autism Project?

It engages autistic individuals in sensory drama games exploring social and communicative skills in a play-based, inclusive environment. Embedded in the games are explorations of eye contact, spatial awareness, turn-taking, facial expression and emotion recognition, imitation, improvisation, humor, storytelling, social communication and more in a physically active and playful atmosphere.

What is the Hunter Heartbeat Method (HHM)?

A method that emphasizes a low ratio so children receive individual attention as they play the games and explore core social skills and communication. The Shakespeare and Autism Project has been a transformative experience for families and facilitators in Central Ohio for over a decade. In addition to positive research findings, the feedback from parents, children and educators has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Objectives:

  • Provide introductory teaching artist training in HHM as part of the Shakespeare & Autism Project mission to create engagement opportunities beyond Central Ohio.
  • Provide autistic children and young adults with an initial experience of the HHM workshops.
  • Provide an opportunity for interested parties to see the HHM in action during a workshop with children.
  • Build new collaborations between the Shakespeare and Autism Project and communities throughout Ohio.

About this event

What is The Shakespeare and Autism Project?

The Shakespeare and Autism Project was developed by The Ohio State University Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts and the Wexner Medical Center’s Nisonger Center. Over the past 13 years, program leaders have been using the “Hunter Heartbeat Method” to teach children and young adults drama games, inspired by the works of William Shakespeare. The Ohio State University and Ohio State Marion have partnered to bring this unique opportunity to the Marion community.

Who can participate?

Students, age 8 to 21 in the Marion community who have been diagnosed with autism or another disability that impacts their ability to express themselves. Participants can be interested in acting, or simply just want to improve their communication, confidence and social skills

What happens at the workshop?

Kevin McClatchy, Project Director and Ohio State Artist Laureate, and a group of community teaching artists will guide participants through the games in a fun, supportive environment!

WHY?

The Shakespeare and Autism Project is dedicated to creating opportunities to experience these work-shops and to establish ongoing engagements in communities throughout Ohio. For more than a decade, families in Central Ohio have enjoyed this program!
