STEMcoding Project launches new data science curriculum and summer CE course for teachers

At a time when high schools nationwide are embracing data science as an alternative to Algebra II and integrating spreadsheet and data-analysis skills across STEM courses, the STEMcoding Project is stepping forward with timely support for teachers ready to modernize their instruction.

The STEMcoding Project, based at The Ohio State University at Marion, is known for re-imagining introductory science and math courses, has spent nearly a decade developing approachable, classroom ready data science materials. The project’s first data science activity debuted in 2017 with what would become the widely used Earth Day Hour of Code lesson. Since then, STEMcoding has expanded its curriculum through multiple grants and collaborations.

According to Associate Professor of Physics, Chris Orban and Associate Professor of Mathematics, Scott Zimmerman who spearhead the STEMcoding Project, the team is excited to announce a complete high school data science curriculum and a new continuing education course for teachers offered through Ohio State’s Professional and Continuing Education offerings at https://continuinged.osu.edu/.

The STEMcoding data science curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical, real world skills using Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. Activities are aligned with the introductory Excel industry credential, helping educators support students in earning a meaningful, workforce relevant certification.

For students taking a full year data science course with STEMcoding materials, this means they’ll be well prepared for the credentialing exam—an exam notably more accessible than many other industry certifications.

“We’re thrilled to help teachers introduce data science without requiring a computer science background,” said Orban. “This curriculum is designed to fit seamlessly into existing math or science pathways while opening doors to modern, data driven careers.”

The summer 2026 continuing education course for teachers is now open to educators everywhere, with both online and hybrid formats available. The hybrid option includes in person July 7th and 8th, 2026 at The Ohio State University at Marion, with the online portion being held July 9th through 17th (excluding weekend days).

The online only option meets daily via Zoom.  The cost of the course includes classroom-ready software, and an early bird discount is available for teachers who register soon.  Participants will earn a certificate documenting completion of up to 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
