The Ohio State University at Marion in partnership with Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen welcome Ohio State Senior Academic Program Coordinator of Comparative Studies and Associated Faculty in Comparative Studies, and French and Italian, Mark Anthony Arceño, Ph.D. to the Dock at Bucci’s, on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. Arceño will present a discussion entitled, “Crafting Terroir: Wine, Place, and Identity in Central Ohio,” as part of the monthly lecture series called Lectures on Tap.
According to the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, there are 426 licensed wine manufacturers and over 175 vineyards throughout the state of Ohio.
"Whenever I talk about or mention Ohio wine, I'm often met with a look of surprise," Arceño noted, recounting that Ohio was once the largest producer of wine in the United States before Prohibition.
This presentation will refer to this wine history, as Arceño draws from his experience as an Ohio Wines Ambassador and food anthropologist who conducts research with winegrowers in Ohio about how they respond to a wide range of changes and sustainability challenges. Together, we will discuss how winegrowers — and those of us who consume their wine — co-construct the goût du terroir or "taste of place" year after year.
Lectures on Tap features Ohio State faculty and other community experts sharing the latest in research and scholarly information on timely subjects from the environment, astronomy, agronomy, health and wellness, linguistics, crime, engineering a better Marion, food safety, Ohio migration patterns, and much more. The goal of the lecture series is to bring the campus and the community together in casual open discussions about timely thought-provoking topics of interest to citizens of the Marion regional area. Lectures on Tap is patterned after the successful international phenomenon Science Cafe that features engaging conversation in casual environments like pubs, restaurants, and cafes between academic/scientific experts and the community on topics of interest to us all.
Attendees are encouraged to eat, drink, and relax during the lecture portion of the evening. Doors open for the event at 5 p.m., allowing time for attendees to place any food or drink orders on your own. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. and a question-and-answer open discussion begins at 6 p.m. Have dinner, an appetizer, and/or a drink, and join this lively casual discussion.
Door prizes for the Lectures on Tap series are provided by Anchors Away Travel.
