Ohio State Marion’s Dr. Ben McCorkle will bring five decades of literary history to downtown Marion on Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m., presenting A Literary Legacy: Cornfield Review at 50 at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen. This edition of the Buckeye Talks on Tap free community lecture series will explore the origins and influence of the campus’s enduring literary journal.
This presentation offers a brief history of The Cornfield Review, Ohio State Marion's long-standing literary journal. Established in 1976, The Cornfield Review has served as a centerpiece of the creative community not only of the Marion campus, but in the central Ohio region and beyond. Copies from the publication archive will be available for perusal, and a small selection of readings will be shared with the audience.
Professor of English, Dr. McCorkle, who has advised students producing this annual publication for many years, teaches courses in composition, rhetoric, and digital media studies primarily at The Ohio State University at Marion. He is the author of the books 100 Years of New Media Pedagogy (with Jason Palmeri) and Rhetorical Delivery as Technological Discourse: A Cross-Historical Study, as well as several articles in publications including Computers and Composition Online, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, and Composition Studies.
He is currently co-director of the Digital Archive of Literacy Narratives, an open public resource made up of stories from people about their experiences learning to read, write, and generally communicate with the world around them.
Buckeye Talks on Tap is free and open to all and offers community members a chance to explore timely issues in an accessible, conversational setting. Inspired by the international Science Café movement, the series brings scholars and citizens together in relaxed environments—pubs, restaurants, and cafés—to discuss topics that matter to our region and our nation.
The event will take place at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen inside Passenger & Rail Co., 320 W. Center St., Marion, Ohio. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the lecture at 5:30 p.m. followed by a short Q&A. Attendees will be entered into a door prize drawing provided by Marcie DeWitt of Anchor and Away Travel. Guests are welcome to purchase dinner or drinks during the program.
Ohio State Marion looks forward to welcoming the community to this timely conversation and reaffirming its commitment to open inquiry, civil dialogue, and shared learning.
