Biography

Abigail Stebbins is assistant professor of elementary education in the Department of Teaching and Learning. She earned her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University, M.Ed. from Kent State University, and B.A. from The College of Wooster. Prior to pursuing her doctoral degree, she was a second grade classroom teacher in northeast Ohio.

 In her courses, Abigail teaches future educators concepts, theories, and perspectives of teaching and learning, as well as how to design and facilitate inquiry-based lessons that blur disciplinary lines and promote democratic citizenship. In her research, Abigail examines children’s “everyday” social and civic learning that occur throughout the school day, how elementary teachers use integrative pedagogies in the classroom, and critical approaches to using children’s literature and online curricular materials to teach social studies in primary classrooms. 

Abigail’s research is published in peer-reviewed journals such as Contemporary Issues in Technology and Social Studies Teacher Education, Social Studies and the Young Learner, Social Studies Research and Practice, and The History Teacher. She also has numerous book chapters published on topics ranging from teaching history with children’s literature to depictions of teachers on television. She regularly presents her work at national conferences of the American Educational Research Association, College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies, Association of Teacher Educators, and Social Science Education Consortium. She also currently serves as an associate editor of Social Studies Journal.
