About this event

Mon., Sep. 22, 2025, (Morrill Hall, Room 200)
Associate Professor of Mathematics, Scott Zimmerman, “How far apart are 'Columbus' and 'Marion'? An intro to metric spaces.”

Abstract:  The cities of Columbus and Marion are about 50 miles away from each other. But how far apart are the words "Columbus" and "Marion"? In this talk, I'll introduce the idea of a metric space, a mathematical concept that allows us to study "distances" between objects in new ways. This talk will be accessible to everyone regardless of mathematical background.
