The Old Northwest, which consists of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, began to open for settlement by non-Indigenous peoples at the end of the 1700s. Using the 1850 census as the basic source of information, especially because it was the first to record the birthplaces of inhabitants, Dr. Rose will explore where they came from, how they got here, and how they were distributed across the region.
