Ohio State Marion Professor of Psychology, Dr. Tracy Tylka, one of the world's foremost authorities on body image, will share information on her recent study which found that people often judge themselves by comparing their current appearance to earlier versions of themselves, a behavior researchers call self-oriented comparison. The study showed that looking back at a time when you felt more attractive is linked to body shame, rumination, and disordered eating, while comparing yourself to a less favorable past appearance is related to higher body appreciation and pride. These research findings could help improve body image treatment and support people navigating aging and other appearance-related changes.
