The Ohio State University at Marion will conduct a controlled prairie burn at the Larry R. Yoder Prairie Nature Center at The Ohio State University at Marion, Saturday October 11th, weather permitting.
According to campus prairie officials, a prescribed burn is a carefully planned and professionally managed fire used to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems. These burns help reduce invasive species, promote native plant growth, and support local biodiversity—all while demonstrating real-world environmental science in action.
“We encourage you to be aware of this important land care effort—and to join us in celebrating how our campus contributes to environmental stewardship and sustainability. This is a meaningful opportunity to witness science in action and support the health of our shared environment,” said Ohio State Marion Dean & Director, Dr. Jennifer Schlueter.
Prescribed burns are an essential tool in sustainable land management. By conducting them safely and strategically, we help preserve the natural areas on our campus for research, education, and future generations.
Campus neighbors and traffic near campus can expect to see smoke and activity from trained professionals onsite. The burn will take place in specific, clearly marked areas of campus. Nearby residents should be assured; all appropriate safety measures will be in place throughout the day.
