Attorney Ron Cramer, Trustee of the Evelyn Walter Foundation, directs $20K to support STEP at Ohio State Marion
Ohio State Marion announced a significant philanthropic gift today as local attorney and longtime community supporter Ron Cramer, directed an additional $20,000 to strengthen the campus’s Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP). The donation expands one of Ohio State’s most impactful student‑success initiatives, helping more Marion students access transformational learning, mentoring and real‑world experiences.
STEP, a signature program of The Ohio State University, empowers second‑year students through faculty mentorship, personal development, financial literacy education, and participation in high‑impact experiences such as undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, service learning, and leadership development. Students also can submit proposals for fellowship funding — typically up to $2,000 — to support these experiences. This gift is in addition to the $350,000 endowment to be established by the Evelyn Walter Foundation at the Marion Community Foundation for the continued support of STEP at Ohio State Marion.
These gifts enhance Ohio State Marion’s ability to provide these opportunities to a growing number of students, many of whom are first‑generation or balancing work and school. Cramer’s support through the private foundation builds on a long history of philanthropy in the Marion community, including his work with the Marion Community Foundation and the establishment of scholarship funds benefiting Ohio State Marion students.
“Ron’s generosity directly impacts the lives of our students,” said Ohio State Marion Director of Development and Community Relations, Cathy Gerber. “STEP experiences broaden horizons, build confidence, and help students envision futures they may not have imagined. This gift ensures more Buckeyes can participate in these transformational opportunities,” she added.
Ohio State Marion’s STEP cohort has participated in a wide range of experiential learning activities, including cultural and civic exploration in Washington, D.C., faculty‑guided research, and community‑based projects. The Evelyn Walter Foundation will expand these offerings and reduce financial barriers for students seeking hands‑on, high impact learning experiences.
The donation underscores Cramer’s commitment to education, community development, and the success of Marion’s next generation of leaders.
