STEMcoding Project

The STEMcoding Project, led by Dr. Chris Orban, associate professor of physics at Ohio State Marion, is Ohio State's flagship effort to integrate computer science and data science concepts into high school math and science classrooms. The program helps students develop coding, spreadsheet, data analysis, and problem-solving skills through hands-on activities connected to real-world topics in physics, environmental science, and sustainability.

A key goal of STEMcoding is to make coding and computational thinking accessible to more students, regardless of their school's resources or access to computer science courses. The initiative provides free classroom activities, teacher professional development, and engaging learning experiences that connect STEM concepts to subjects students already study.

Under the leadership of Dr. Chris Orban and Dr. Scott Zimmerman, STEMcoding has expanded to include data science curriculum, instructional videos, teacher training programs, and partnerships with schools across Ohio. In 2024, the initiative was recognized by The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement as a Program of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship.
