Katie Fusek, a double major in history and English at Ohio State Marion was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society at Ohio State in April.
Fusek attended the history department's Undergraduate Awards Reception and Phi Alpha Theta Initiation at the Ohio Union on Columbus campus Tuesday, April 23, 2019.
Fusek is currently working on a history seminar research project on American slavery, and has won an Ohio State Marion research grant to travel to the Kentucky Historical Society this summer to do archival research. She also just completed a history internship at the Delaware Historical Society in spring 2019.
Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, was established in 1921 "to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians." The society seeks "to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication..." In addition to publishing the scholarly magazine The Historian, Phi Alpha Theta holds biennial national conventions, as well as regional meetings, where students and professors meet to exchange ideas and research.
To become a Phi Alpha Theta member, undergraduate students must complete a minimum of fifteen semester hours in history, achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in history and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. Membership is not limited to history.
