The Idea of North Artist Statement
The Idea of North takes its name from Glenn Gould’s evocative 1967 radio essay, in which he remarks, “[T]he north has remained for me a convenient place to dream about, spin tales about sometimes, and, in the end, avoid.” For Gould, the North functions as more than a location on the map – it is a space upon which we project our desires for unspoiled wilderness, for solitude, and the terrifying beauty of the sublime. There is little doubt that the North is a part of our collective consciousness. The region allows for an examination of humans’ interaction with nature and our idealization of it, as it is increasingly used for political, cultural, and environmental ends. No matter what latitude we live at, the North is alive in our imagination. This portfolio offers a glimpse of how a diverse group of artists conceptualize this oft-romanticized and charged symbol from their respective geographical positions.

The Idea of North is organized by Nicole Pietrantoni. This portfolio continues the exchange between American and Icelandic artists that began during her time working at Íslensk Grafík as a Fulbright fellow and Leifur Eiríksson Foundation scholar 2010-11. Portfolios will be given to each of the participating artists; the collection of The Icelandic Printmakers’ Association in Reykjavík, Iceland; the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavík, Iceland; the Southern Graphics Council International Archives in Oxford, Mississippi; and the Leifur Eiríksson Foundation in Richmond, Virginia.

The Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery is located off the main lobby at the east entrance of Ohio State Morrill Hall, 1465 Mount Vernon Avenue, Marion, Ohio 43302.  The gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., September through May, and 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June through August.
