Academic Recognition

Honors students at Ohio State Marion receive recognition for the quality of their work-in and out of the classroom-beginning their very first year.

Recognition of your completion of an Honors course is indicated on your transcript. Completion of a senior thesis is noted on your diploma with the designation, "graduate with distinction." Your college of enrollment may also bestow special recognition on your diploma. These distinctions include summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude distinctions.

In addition there are several recognitions specifically for Ohio State Marion Students:

  • Hendricks International Study Award: This award is given to assist students to carryout extended field studies or participate in academic foreign travel programs.
  • Wm. Kay Davis Research Award: The Wm Kay Davis Endowment provides honors students with opportunities to significantly enhance the quality of their education through undergraduate research.
  • Education Society Scholarship Award: This award, to a student intending a career in the field of education, is made by the Education Society to recognize service and leadership in the organization.
  • Howard Donors Book Award: Awards are given to outstanding students who have participated in regular Honors courses. The awards recognize Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Howard’s life-long contributions to academic excellence at Ohio State Marion. These awards are funded by contributions to the Ohio State Marion Honors Fund.
  • Creative Writing Award: The awards are given to outstanding students who have participated in the creative writing awards competition. Students are recognized for their creative writing achievements in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction and chosen by judges who are published writers outside of the OSU Marion community.
  • Non-Traditional Student Essay Award: This award recognizes the achievements of students who balance college work with significant life challenges such as beginning college after age 24, single parenthood, or veteran status.
  • Babich Writing Award: The Babich Writing Award is sponsored by the Honors program and is given in honor of the late Mr. Robert Babich, in whose name the initial funding was given to establish the Marion Campus Honors Fund. Separate awards are given for the best paper written by a freshman or sophomore and by a junior or senior. 
  • Franklin Fine Arts Award: Award given to undergraduate student excelling in creativity.
  • CRC Press Freshman Chemistry Award: This award is presented to the outstanding student in the three-quarter freshman chemistry sequence for science, medicine, and engineering majors.
  • Ohio State Marion Undergraduate Excellence Awards: These awards are presented to freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students recognized as outstanding by virtue of combined achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service to The Ohio State University at Marion.
  • C. Eugene Maynard Academic Excellence Award: This award is given each year to the outstanding senior student who completed a significant portion of his or her studies on the Marion Campus, and attained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.
  • John Mount Academic Excellence Award: The John Mount award is given each year to the outstanding senior student who began studies on the Marion campus and has completed, or is currently completing, studies on the Columbus campus, and attained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5
