Social Work Degree Application Process

Our application process is designed to allow students to outline their motivation to enter the social work profession and increase the likelihood of a good match between the student applicant and the major. In order to apply to the Social Work major, you must meet the criteria listed below.

Current Ohio State students who are in the pre-major for the social work program should meet with your academic advisor, Wolali Dedo to review the application process and be sure your course work is planned correctly for spring 13 and/or summer 13 semesters to meet the requirements for the major prior to autumn 13 semester.

Transfer students planning to attend the The Ohio State University Marion campus to complete the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) please be sure your transfer credits will include equivalent courses to the pre-major requirements listed below if you plan to apply to the major for autumn semester 2013. Complete the following pre-major required coursework prior to beginning the social work major in autumn semester 2013.

• Biology 1102
• English 1110
• Math Placement Level R or higher or completion of Math 1075
• Psychology 1100
• Social Work 1100 or equivalent, 1120, 1130, and 1140
• Sociology 1101

In addition, you will need to do the following:

• Earn a minimum of 2.0 cumulative grade point-hour ration
• Earn a minimum of a 2.0 pre-major point hour ration after completion of the required
  pre-major courses
• Complete a personal statement: Applicant is strongly encouraged to complete volunteer experience in social related field prior applying. Any work/volunteer experiences related to social work should be included in your application
• Submit a PDF of your unofficial transcript  (OSU students this is an Advising report)

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following standards:

• Academic Record
• Composition and content of the submitted personal statement
• Evidence of emotional and professional readiness to work with clients
• Applicant work/volunteer experiences related to Social Work

If you are a current Ohio State student on any Ohio State campus, you need to submit your application to the social work major using CARMEN. If you are a future transfer student from another university or college intending to major in social work, you must complete the application process to The Ohio State University as well as to the College of Social Work.

To apply to Ohio State, go to www.osu.edu and complete the on-line application found on the "Future Students" tab. To apply to the social work major, click below on the "College of Social Work Major Application" to download and complete the application. In addition, click "Personal Statement" to view the instructions and questions. Email your completed application, written personal statement, and unofficial transcript to Meghan Peters at peters.547@osu.edu. Application materials (application, statement, transcript) must be sent together in order to be considered for review. You will receive a confirmation email, once your materials have been received.

• Personal Statement (link will provide instructions and questions.)
• Unofficial transcript from your current university or college (OSU STUDENTS- this is an Advising Report accessed in your Student Center)

Deadlind to Apply:  February 1,  2013 (Applications received beyond the deadline will be considered if space permits)
